Alan Ladd's hardboiled poor-boy doctor vows to cure Loretta Young’s snobbish socialite of her deafness in a medical melodrama whose treatments (“But the serum killed the rabbit!”) are as high-pitched as its love scenes.
This was Ladd’s only excursion into soap opera and he brings a terse, noirish glamour to it, aided by surprisingly snappy Raymond Chandler scripting.
But Susan Hayward’s minxy, fiancée-filching sister steals the picture out from under everyone, with every petulant toss of her curls.
