Initially, Alan Parker's faithful recreation of Frank McCourt's phenomenally successful memoir of life in Depression-era Ireland appears about as welcome as a bout of flu. Something like 18 children seem to perish in the first five minutes, but the tone lightens as Frank grows up, and Emily Watson is superb throughout.
