Penned by its title character's real-life counterpart, Denzel Washington's directorial debut is as shamelessly sentimental as they come. If you're happy having your buttons pushed, - sod that, pummelled, - then step right up. But even the toughest of tummies will be tested when Derek Luke's young Navy recruit goes in search of the birth mother who abandoned him to a childhood of abuse. More engaging are the early, Good Will Hunting-style therapy scenes between Luke and an on-form Denzel's fatherly headshrinker.
