A powerful landmark of early Soviet cinema

The first in dovzhenko’s ukraine trilogy is a powerful landmark of early Soviet cinema. It sweeps from desolate post-war imagery to the full-blooded clashes of the Kiev workers’ uprising of 1918, set to a searing score. Though it looks impressive, the disc lacks the historian commentary of the earlier US release.
