A sex comedy from Paul Schrader? Well, yes and no. Schrader's irony-edged biopic of '60s sitcom star and compulsive shag monster Bob Crane (Greg Kinnear) is really a trademark tale of acidic affliction.
Seizing the chance for another poke at the psyche of the American male, Schrader crafts a brilliant portrait of bland self-destruction as Crane vacuously bumps 'n' grinds away his family and career. But the helmer couldn't have come close without the outstanding Kinnear, who nails the oblivious oblivion of his role with uncanny assurance.
