Bad News Bears

3

Hired to manage a team of Little League no-hopers who look like "the bronze medallists for the Special Olympics", Billy Bob Thornton's booze-sodden ex-pro baseball player is given an earful by rival coach Greg Kinnear. "These kids need role models and you're not it," he says and that's true enough, by superficial standards. However, Bad News Bears gently shows his free-speaking, honest approach to sprogs works far better than pushing children to live your dreams.

Richard Linklater's "remix" of the 1976 original shares its spiky attitude and remains faithful without being pointless. It's funnier for a start - Thornton knocking every one-liner out of the park with the free rein Linklater allows him, though a picked-up pace would've been welcome.
