Violent, porny and something of a succès de scandale on its cinema release, the main surprise on returning to this womantic road-trip shocker is how dull it is.
Nice to have the film released uncut and in widescreen for the first time, but unsimulated sex just isn’t the provocation it once was. There’s a pedal-to-the-metal commitment to jolting the audience that, though now quaint, does deserve respect.
The scrappy DV look gives it a scuzzy realism, and somewhere in its DNA there’s a very French feminist polemic.
But what’s the point of an arty porno-thriller that’s not remotely arousing, thought-provoking or thrilling?
