Barbarossa: Siege Lord

A bit of a dull medieval history lesson from Rutger Hauer...

Barbarossa review

Proceeding with all the pace and elegance of the giant, trundling siege engines used in its battle scenes, this sludgy 13th-Century epic concerns the empire-building exploits of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa (Rutger Hauer), determined to bring Italy under the cosh of German imperialism.

It contains all the iffy dialogue and corny acting of your average Ridley ’n’ Russell effort, but none of the flourish.

Lavish sets, expensive cossies and Hauer himself don’t distract from its mish-mash of generic hero story and boring history lesson.
