Behind Enemy Lines (tbc)

BY: Total Film Oct 1st 2002 FILED UNDER: DVD

This is one long, dumb chase sequence, as Owen Wilson's navy flier gets stuck in the titular predicament after being shot down over Bosnia. First-time director John Moore is a brash visual stylist and some images stick, but the co-opting of genocide for Top Gun-lite movie heroics sticks in the craw.

DVD Extras:

A slick, info-heavy pile, including blood 'n' guts deleted scenes that had to be snipped so the movie could snag a PG-13 in the States. Best, though, are the commentaries. The frankness of Moore and editor Paul Martin Smith about how clueless they were almost makes you forgive the movie's deficiencies. Producer John Davis relays decent anecdotage, including how he tried to keep Moore away from Gene Hackman pre-production, in case the veteran took a dislike to the novice helmer. Now that's collaboration.
