England's captain is surely the perfect Indian son-in-law, - model professional, devoted family man - but 18-year-old Jess Bhamra's (Parminder Nagra) family are less than thrilled by their soccer-mad daughter's obsession with the sarong-wearing footie star. They want her to study, marry and perfect her cooking... Predictable but perky, this crowd-pleasing comedy cannily capitalises on obsessions old (footie) and new (anything Indian) as it weaves its twinkle-toed way to feelgood glory.
A surprise hit when it netted a box-office goal on its theatrical release, this is actually the definition of a safe home win: an East Is East/Billy Elliot one-two with jumpers for goalposts.
DVD Extras:
A short but sweet featurette and deleted scenes revealing that extra insights into Anglo-Indian cultural integration were substituted for the love triangle. Best is director Gurinder Chadha's aloo gobi cookery lesson, as she's badgered by her mum and auntie. These two deserve their own show - Chadha's mum's "Peel them!" would stop Ainsley Harriott arsing about in seconds.
