A paean to '60s surfing culture, Big Wednesday did little business when it hit cinemas in 1978. Today, it has a cult following. Why? Mainly because the surfing sequences are so spectacular, but also because the friendship between Jan-Michael Vincent, William Katt and Gary Busey is warm and moving, and the rifts caused by Vietnam believable.
DVD Extras:
Director John Milius' commentary is packed with anecdotes. Milius laughs even harder in the featurette as he reveals how Steven Spielberg and George Lucas gave him a percentage of Star Wars and Close Encounters in return for a cut of Big Wednesday. Apparently, George still regrets the deal...
