John Frankenheimer's moving drama tells the story of banged up double murderer Robert Stroud (Burt Lancaster), a prisoner who takes flight from solitary confinement through a burgeoning love of birds (the feathery variety, that is). Lancaster's Stroud has been shaved of a few rough edges to make him likeable, but Big Burt's performance is still incredible: he moves from cold blooded killer to brilliant ornithologist with utter conviction.
DVD Extras:
Trailer. What is it with DVD distributors? It seems that any 'old' movie, regardless of quality, gets the vanilla disc treatment. Okay, so there may not be a lot of archive footage banging around, but surely we deserve more than just a trailer? In a world were Planet Of The bloody Apes comes with a million hours of extras, this is a crime.
