Birthday Girl

3

When nerdy loner Ben Chaplin sends off for a Russian mail order bride, the last thing he expects is to be paired off with slutty sex bomb Nicole Kidman. He thinks she’s too good to be true, and she is – a couple of bonks later, two of her “cousins” show up and bilk him into robbing the bank where he works. A homegrown variation on yuppie-in-peril classics like Something Wild and After Hours, Jez Butterworth’s film is not your average Kidman vehicle (which might explain why it sat on a shelf for two years) and can’t quite reconcile its rom-com and thriller elements. That said, Kidman keeps it afloat, bringing a sleazy glamour to her skanky heroine and speaking Ruskie like a native.
