Friedberg and Seltzer’s dire cash-ins have so devalued the modern spoof you’d be forgiven for expecting Blaxploitation Movie.
Instead, this is the sharpest genre celebration/deconstruction in years, outstripping even Grindhouse for loving piss-taking.
It’s pitch-perfect in look and feel, from choppy editing to jive-ass slang and funk music.
Where this really scores is matching form with content. Director Scott Sanders doesn’t skimp on quotable lines, OTT action and surreal plot twists, while star/co-writer Michael Jai White manages to essay enviable cool as the titular righteous defender even as he keeps the belly laughs rolling.
