Ridley Scott's epic is a much-praised touchstone for all dark-future depictions, but it's basically a tarted-up Philip Marlowe story. Harrison Ford lacks Bogey's charm, although Hauer is excellent as the android nuisance. Like fellow noir hit LA Confidential, Blade Runner does enchant the mind - but it bypasses the heart and emotions.
DVD Extras:
Bugger all. A film with two separate theatrical cuts, a fascinating production history and enough subtext for students to drink the world dry of cappuccino as they're discussing it. Yet there are no extras, there's a shoddy menu screen and you can't directly access every scene. You'd be far better off spending the extra money on Paul Sammon's sci-fi gospel The Making Of Blade Runner, and sticking with the trusty old VHS.
