Bloody Birthday

2

An '80s slasher flick with a difference: the killers are a trio of 10-year-old kids, all born under a conscience-blotting solar eclipse. Amateurish, devoid of suspense and improbably blasé in its stealing of musical cues (Psycho, Jaws, Halloween), it now retains a car-crash magnetism courtesy of its central conceit. Hard to imagine post-Jamie Bulger/ Columbine filmmakers showing cherubic kids reaching for ant poison, baseball bats and a .357 Magnum...

DVD Extras:

Only a 20-minute interview with producer Max Rosenberg but it proves a riot, the old boy tagging helmer Ed Hunt a "fucking nut" who was "supremely stupid". He also pins the genesis of the project, a mix of Dostoyevsky's The Possessed - "If God is dead, anything is possible" - and the desire to "make a picture that could make a lot of money".
