“I’m a huge fan of the old comedy duos, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Dean and Jerry. These guys are as good as that, they’re a classic comedy team...” So says executive producer Bill D’Elia, discussing James Spader and William Shatner, getting to the heart of the main appeal of this Ally McBeal-style legal comedy. The sight of Spader trying to outham Shatner is a joy to behold. It’s just a shame they’re often working with planks of wood strapped to their backs (Monica Potter, Rhona Mitra). Still, with Spader’s approach to his lawyer character apparently “autistic robot” and Shatner constantly channelling David Hasselhoff, you won’t care that everyone around them seems to be struggling to keep pace.
BEST BIT: The sight of Spader and Mitra dressed as Batman and Robin. Hmmm, Robin.
