Breakdown

3

An adept, tense thriller, Jonathan Mostow's Hollywood breakthrough offers some hope that Terminator 3 might not suck. On the basis of this little number, the Rise Of The Machines helmer can certainly orchestrate a decent chase scene.

The set-up is pure Hitchcock: a couple break down in the middle of nowhere, so the wife hitches a lift to the next rest stop to get help. But when hubby arrives there later, she's disappeared... And their highway Good Samaritan denies ever meeting them.

It's a gripping, Vanishing-style scenario that creeps along well for the first act, with Kurt Russell convincing as the desperate schmo, and JT Walsh scoring as a sinister baddie. Suspense gives way to silliness long before the end, but this'll do for the occasional nail-chew.
