Brick Lane

3

Duty is pitted against desire when married Nazneen (Tannishtha Chatterjee) falls for radicalised Muslim Karim (Christopher Simpson) in author Monica Ali’s tale about immigrant life. Sarah Gavron’s sensitive direction and Chatterjee’s understated performance do a great job of putting Nazneen’s inner conflict on screen, but any wider social insights are lost. Then again, when a film is shot, edited and acted with such obvious compassion for its subjects as this, that hardly matters.

DVD Extras:

Extras include Ali in conversation with fellow novelist Hanif Kureishi at the ICA.
