Forget Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Rings, this is the year's best literary adaptation. Taking just enough liberties with plot and structure, the film actually improves on the book. Zellweger's chardonnay-chugging ciggie-sparking chubster is hugely lovable, the side-crunching comic moments queue up, and the whole thing has a screwball sweetness about it that lingers long after the end credits.
DVD Extras:
Commentary with director Sharon Maguire, behind-the-scenes featurette, Bridget Jones articles, music videos, eight deleted scenes.Maguire's commentary is a classic. Half seasoned professional director, half giggly singleton ("Here he comes! Ding dong... it's Colin Firth!"), it's like having a pleasantly semi-sozzled mate slumped around watching the film with you. It's just a shame that she doesn't commentate on the deleted scenes too, but then again they're chunky enough and funny enough to stand on their own. The documentary's a bit slight and glossy, but this is still definitely a package to make a date with.
