So you're making a movie about a Kansas boy who goes to New York to do good but instead finds himself doing coke all day, every day. Why, then, do you cast Michael J Fox?
Coming off Teen Wolf and The Secret Of My Success, this was the baby-faced actor's first attempt to stretch himself. It doesn't work, Fox lacking the range to bare his soul, the make-up team lacking the guts (permission?) to ruin those cherubic looks.
There's strong support, though, notably from Dianne Wiest as Fox's cancer-stricken ma and Jason Robards as an alcoholic editor. It's with these fleeting turns that the movie finally mainlines emotion; elsewhere it's just a lesser version of Less Than Zero.
