Bright Young Things

3

Sex, drugs and party-obsessed semi-celebs living it up as the tabloids crush to grab the latest scoop. Tch... The Olden Days, eh?

Evelyn Waugh's still spot-on satire of roaring twentysomething misbehaviour is cranked into fizzy life by Stephen Fry, the debut helmer proving something of an arch stylist as he delivers a barrage of whirling, woozy visuals. No musty period shooting styles here, then, though the finale does see the lovable luvvie diluting most of Waugh's acid tongue with way too much Milk Of Human Kindness.

DVD Extras:

Fry raconteurs his way through a charming commentary, while a raw behind-the-scenes peek captures the fascinating highs and lows of shooting. Avoid the Stephen Fry: Director mini-doc like the plague, though. As cast (Emily Mortimer, Jim Broadbent, Simon Callow) and crew line up to praise him, it's purely backslapalicious stuff.
