Broken Circle Breakdown

4

Tapping toes and teardrops...

Didier Johan Heldenbergh is obsessed with bluegrass music; Elise (Veerle Baetens) loves tattoos: soon they’re into each other, with a daughter on the way.

Yet the hospital-bound opening hints at heartbreak to come in Felix Van Groeningen’s musical drama. An intricate flashback structure raises what could have been mere misery-porn into a stark study of the passions and beliefs that complete us, and what happens when the circle breaks.

Be warned: it’s a weepie – yet it’s also a joyous toe-tapper, with the leads singing for real, investing all their characters’ romance and pain into rapturous turns.
