In Haifa, Israel, fortysomething Dafna (Orly Silbersatz Banai) struggles to raise four children after the death of her hubby. Her kids are drifting and it's upon their lives that writer/director Nir Bergman focuses his drama. Instead of attending school, eldest son Yair (Nitai Gaviratz) chooses to hand out leaflets dressed as a mouse. Artistic Maya (Maya Maron), meanwhile, aspires to be a slacker only her time is spent having to look after her siblings. Broken Wings may sound grim, but Bergman lightens the tone by switching between Yair and Maya's grief and outbursts of black humour. The result isn't as dazzling as the movie's rapturous reception at film festivals might suggest, but this remains confident filmmaking.
