After the dramatic dirge of The Majestic, Jim Carrey returns to funnyman form with this chucklesome if somewhat clunky laffer, which sees his TV hack handed divine powers when God (Morgan Freeman) gets sick of his whining.
Tentatively retuning his comic persona, the star isn't half as inspired as he was in his first pairing with director Tom Shadyac, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. However, this easily matches Liar Liar and has a touching subtext as Bruce comes to terms with being `just' a funny guy. Memo to Oscar: screw you.
DVD Extras:
"We tried to make it more spiritual than religious," says the self-named Shady Hack on his amiable director's blab, although he admits to hoping "it may rekindle someone's interest in God". He also hints about a possible sequel, naturally entitled Bruce: The Second Coming. Thirty minutes of deleted scenes show just how haphazard the creative process was. There are some okayish outtakes but the five-minute featurette The Process Of Jim reveals itself to be the usual star suck-up, even if it does feature an amusing improv routine. Diverting enough, if hardly divine.
