This is a love story… about bugs. And also paranoia, grief and co-dependency. Adapted from Tracy Lett’s stage play, it’s camera sticks to Ashley Judd’s damaged barmaid like an aphid to flypaper as she becomes complicit in her lover Michael Shannon’s (delusional?) obsession with, well, bugs. Edgily performed and directed with verve and discipline by a rejuvenated William Friedkin (who also provides the disc’s incisive commentary), this is a creepy, crawly gem.
