Bunraku

Garish and largely incomprehensible samurai mash-up

Bunraku review

A candy -coloured mash-up of a movie, Bunraku’s so bonkers it could’ve unspooled from an LSD-addled mindmeld between Tarantino, Miike and, er, Fritz Lang.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, it teams a cowboy drifter (Josh Hartnett) with a samurai (Japanese pop idol Gackt) on a mission to take down a crime lord (Ron Perlman).

Director Guy Moshe steals from games, comics, Kill Bill and German Expressionism, while occasionally choreographing fights on trampolines.

End result? A (con)fusion of styles that’s painful on the eyes.
