Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid

4

Not so much a Western as a period buddy movie, this William Goldman-scripted classic charts the final years of outlaws Butch (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford). Nudged out of the bank-robbing game when the modern world starts to catch up with them, they take their likeable roguery to Bolivia. Great set-pieces (the cliff-top jump, that freeze-frame ending) are slightly marred by Burt Bacharach's irritating score.

DVD Extras:

Commentary (with director George Roy Hill, DoP Conrad Hall, associate producer Robert Campbell and lyricist Hal David), 42-minute documentary, seven video interviews (including Newman and Redford), alternate credit roll, three trailers.Although the behind-the-scenes story is scattered across the extras, everyone who matters is allowed their say at some point. The documentary (made after the movie wrapped, but before it was released) has great on-set footage and quotes from director Hill. The commentary, meanwhile, mostly sticks to what's happening on screen and is cinematographer Hall's stomping ground. Plus the cast, Goldman and Bacharach get beyond the usual puff in nearly an hour's worth of additional interviews.
