John Madden's adaptation of Louis de Bernières' World War Two novel is a lacklustre affair. Nic Cage's gallant Italian captain reeks of Cornetto adverts, while Penélope Cruz lacks the charisma to make his Greek lover Pelagia believable. Only John Hurt's turn as Pelagia's pa and John Toll's cinematography save the film.
