Caramel

4

Director and star Nadine Labaki calls it a “little sweet candy” in a winning extra, but there’s nothing gooey about this love letter to Beirut and female friendship. The plot centres on a beauty parlour in which caramel is used for waxing and women lead complex secret lives. Labaki plays a stylist who wants to meet her lover’s wife, while her colleague teases private pleasures from intimate makeover moments with a female client… Authenticity is amplified by a non-professional cast and their struggle for self-assertion amid the weight of tradition lends this a natural depth.
