A chick flick about a woman struggling with her fiancé’s sudden death, this post- Alias Jennifer Garner vehicle battles to find a middle road between tear-jerker and rom-com. The star does her best in a story that tries to wring humour from heartbreak, but the real draw is the supporting cast: wise-cracking lardass Kevin Smith, smirking ladykiller Timothy Olyphant, and Juliette Lewis as the tramp Jen’s beloved possibly knocked up. Writer-director Susannah Grant’s commentary is smart and articulate; shame she began her behind-the-camera career with such lachrymose sludge.
