Max Ophüls’ trademark sense of doom is all over this lush noir melodrama, in which idealistic shopgirl Leonora (Barbara Bel Geddes) is torn between her psychotic multi-millionaire husband and James Mason’s virtuous doctor. Full of Ophüls’ fluid, imaginative camerawork, it boasts nuanced performances from Mason and Robert Ryan as the splenetic spouse (modelled on Howard Hughes). As the detailed, academic chat-track points out, the film was plagued with problems. This explains its uneven denouement, but not Barbara Bel Geddes’ inability to muster more than two expressions…
