Chopper

4

A loosely based-on-fact biopic of a self-publicising, mass-murdering bad-ass sounds like a morally corrupt project. On the face of it, tyro writer/director Andrew Dominik's take on the life of Aussie celeb-crim Mark "Chopper" Read provides proof that crime does pay. And yet, Dominik's movie is too intelligent to dismiss: thanks to a witty, unpatronising script and a star turn from Antipodean stand-up Eric Bana, Read is portrayed as a paradox of a man who's reprehensible and likeable at the same time.
