Circus Of Horrors

3

Roll up, roll up for the greatest show on Earth! See beautiful women disfigured! Lion-tamers mauled! Knife-throwing acts go wrong... and more! Dating back to 1960, this British schlocker stars Anton Diffring as a crazy plastic surgeon using a circus as a front for his experiments on facially disfigured women. After restoring the girls to beauty, he sticks them in the big top then kills them off in a series of grotesque “accidents”. Despite its sequined babes in D-cups and flashes of sadism, Circus Of Horrors never quite pulls out all the psychosexual stops. It remains memorably trashy, though, thanks to some grotesquely funny moments (Donald Pleasence being attacked by a patently stuffed bear for one). Lurid and sensational in its execution, it’s nothing more than cheesy ‘60s filler, but it could be a missing British link between Tod Browning’s Freaks and sexploitation maestro Jess Franco.
