Close My Eyes

Playwright Stephen Poliakoff's best-known film is a fairly crude tale of stiff English folk ravaged by wanton lusts, masquerading as a parable for the '80s.

Its surface plot is a lovers' triangle between Clive Owen, Saskia Reeves and Alan Rickman, complicated by the fact that Owen and Reeves are siblings who are shagging each other over a long, hot summer. Meanwhile, Owen's HIV-positive boss is used as an opportunistic, crassly broad symptom of a decade in decay.

Between such thudding metaphors, Reeves and Owen's drab performances, and Rickman's accomplished-but-arch mannerisms, this is just an over-baked TV drama with pretensions.
