Closing The Ring

Shirley MacLaine plays Ethel Ann, a cantankerous old lush forced to face the past when her long-lost wedding ring turns up at a WWII crash site in Belfast. It’s bad luck this wartime romance was released in the same year as the superior Atonement, but only bad judgment can explain Mischa Barton’s casting as the young Ethel Ann. Director Richard Attenborough works hard to wring sentiment from the script, but there’s no substance to it. Extras comprise unilluminating interviews.
