An engaging and elegant portrayal of a fashion legend

Audrey Tautou pouts her petite heart out as Coco Chanel in Anne Fontaine’s elegant portrait of the designer’s formative years.

Charting her ascent from humble seamstress to haute couture sensation, the film presents Coco as a driven mademoiselle with no qualms about using wealthy suitors to advance her career.

Essentially it’s La Vie En Rose, with frocks replacing tunes. What’s missing is a heroine we can root for.
