Over-the-top sword-and sorcery guff as Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Milius team up for this lo-tech tale. The 'plot' sees our muscular hero set out to kill James Earl Jones' evil sorcerer. Post-Lord Of The Rings this should look like warmed-up mud, but Arnie's po-faced gurning and heavy-handed swordplay give the movie a lovable innocence and rough-edged magic. Still good fun after all these years.
DVD Extras:
The deleted scenes are really just commentary-free outtakes (John Milius' cameo as a fast-food vendor excepted) but the featurettes boast chinwags with all the main actors and crew. Better still is the excellent commentary, a dour Milius and chirpy Arnie proving an irresistible double act. Highlights? The on-set stories about vicious dogs, horny cast members and the number of times the future Governor of California got laid in the movie. Talk about wielding your mighty sword...
