Cross Of Iron

On the Eastern front, a German platoon is being battered by the Russians

In his last great movie, Sam Peckinpah transfers the themes he'd covered again and again in Westerns like The Wild Bunch (loyalty and betrayal, bonding in an all-male group) to a war-time setting. It's 1943 and, on the Eastern front, a German platoon is being battered by the Russians. The popular Sergeant Steiner (James Coburn) rises above the politics of war, caring only for the safety of his men, but he's undermined by the glory-hunting Captain Stransky (Maximilian Schell).
