Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

5

For a movie which came with the dreaded subtitles stigma, Crouching Tiger has dragon-punched through all possible expectations to emerge as front-runner for movie of the year. Rampaging across the international box-office, scooping awards and praise as it goes, this epic love-story-cum-scrapfest delivers on all levels. Ang Lee, alongside his cast and crew, has made a film that carves a groove into your brain and refuses to leave.

DVD Extras:

Commentary by director Ang Lee and producer James Schamus, Unleashing Dragons: The Making Of... documentary, interview with Michelle Yeoh, photo-montage, trailers, weblink.Chop-socky this good deserves a disc to match, and Crouching Tiger delivers. The extras are variable - Yeoh is disarming (no pun intended) and witty during her interview, but the documentary is strictly press-kit quality (soundbites all round). Lee and Schamus' commentary, however, is informative, funny and - while it often seems that Schamus is bashing the film - you can sense the affection the two share from their long working relationship. A few deleted scenes would have been nice (there must be some outtakes from a movie this long, surely?), but Dragon lovers will still find plenty to light their fire here.
