If 2001 is an acid flick, Dark Star is a stoner space oddity, as four astronaut hippies (led by scripter Dan O’Bannon) nuke stars with talking bombs.
Its Marmite humour may have flopped 37 years ago, but producer Jack H Harris’ funding of debut director John Carpenter to expand the film school project into this irreverent cult classic now looks like a good investment.
This double discer packages two movie cuts, a tedious “super-fan” commentary, interviews and a two-hour doc.
Carpenter’s absent, so there’s still time for a 40th anniversary edition in 2014.
