Dead End

3

Directed by William Wyler with cinematography by Gregg Toland (Citizen Kane), this adaptation of Sidney Kingsley’s ‘socially concerned’ Broadway hit deals with the effect of the Great Depression on a Lower East Side Manhattan neighbourhood. Heavy handed, stagy and very of its time, Dead End features a terrific early performance from Humphrey Bogart, as gangster Baby Face Martin. His final defiant exit is unforgettable, worthy of a better film.
