Dead Poets Society

4

Not quite as poetic as it wants to be, but thanks to Peter Weir's evocative storytelling and a wonderfully measured performance from Robin Williams, this feelgood tale of prep school students inspired to "seize the day" has moments that continue to sparkle 13 years on.

DVD Extras:

Commentary with Peter Weir, cinematographer John Seale and writer Tom Schulman, scrapbook, cast interviews, tribute to late sound whiz Alan Splet, John Seale's Masterclass featurette, trailer. The commentary's a good one, with Weir and Schulman intricately recalling how they brought their film to life. The cast interviews are also filled with fond memories and are thankfully free from the usual back-slappery. Only Seale lets the side down with his laborious guide to lighting a film set. Snore.
