Dear Frankie

At the cinema, Shona Auerbach's under-achieving melodrama seemed to be made for TV. As it turns out, even on the box, its good intentions, pleasingly low-key performances and painterly, if somewhat tourist-book eye for the Scottish seaside setting, can't compensate for under-persuasive plotting and knee-high ambitions. Sure, Emily Mortimer gives a decent, reined-in delivery as the struggling single mother who dupes her deaf, nine-year-old moppet into thinking his absent "da" is away at sea. That very restraint, though, eventually seems bound up in the film's overall too-tepid-to-tearjerk timidity.
