Death Of A Salesman

3

A highly stylised staging for American TV of Arthur Miller's poignant Pulitzer prize-winning play, centring on an ageing travelling salesman (Dustin Hoffman) facing the fact that his career and family life have been a failure. Hoffman and John Malkovich savour their exchanges as father and son (they both won Emmys), and while the flimsy sets are off-putting at first, they do help you focus on the uniformly excellent performances.

DVD Extras:

Making Of feature, trailer, biographies, stills gallery. The 80-minute Making Of documentary is certainly worth seeing - even if the quality of the video diary isn't great, it does offer the chance to watch Hoffman perfecting his performance under the watchful eyes of Arthur Miller. There's little evidence of the diminutive actor's notoriously 'difficult' on-set persona, but thankfully ample insight into how he gets under the skin of a character.
