Any connoisseur of '90s genre cinema will tell you that this downbeat crime-thriller is one of the most underrated flicks of the decade.
In what may yet prove to be his finest performance, Larry Fishburne plays a deep-cover agent walking the thin blue line between cop and crook, while setting up an underworld drug deal. Covering his back is Jeff Goldblum's shady-lawyer-turned-white-collar-crim, who's so unctuously over-greased he threatens to slide off the screen at any moment.
Seduced by the bling-bling lifestyle of fast cars, hookers and unlimited blow, the stakes keep getting higher, Fishburne finding himself trapped in an inner-city hell. Morality is flexible; the price of failure is a bullet to the back of the head.
As the strutting theme tune from Dr Dre gloats: "Yeah, and you don't stop, cause it's 1-8-7 on an undercover cop."
