In 1993, Nicole Kidman and Bill Pullman starred in Malice, a barbed thriller with the tagline, 'See it before someone tells you the secret!' Mikael Håfström's Derailed is a comparable breed of tricky filmmaking that should offer a similar warning. The difference, however, is that this film's as taut as a bloodhound's jowls.
We witness the after-effects of some planned extra-marital hanky panky between bored husband Clive Owen and an unhappily married stranger (Jennifer Aniston). But before they can get down'n'dirty, a robber (sneery Vincent Cassel) busts into their hotel room, robs them both and rapes her. Bad enough. But then the Gallic git blackmails Owen for savings intended for his seriously-ill daughter. You'll probably work out what's going on before he does...
The extras are bleak, with all the usual "He was the only guy we wanted"... "It's great that she's got a role outside of the box"... "I thought it was Kafkaesque" and "It's Hitchcockian" blah, blah soundbites and little else.
