A woman is deemed a goddess by her father-in-law

A Bengali wife’s devout father-in-law decides on the strength of a dream that she’s an incarnation of the goddess Kali and must be worshipped.

To her dismay, word spreads and devotees flock from miles around. Her husband desperately tries to restore sanity, but it’s beyond his control.

Satyajit Ray’s study of the destructive power of superstition is typically compassionate; there are no easy villains. Intelligent and moving.
