Tom DiCillo no doubt prides himself on his reputation for making offbeat indies. Unfortunately, his latest is a poor relation to 1991's Johnny Suede - - a lame attempt to merge romantic comedy and police procedural. Denis Leary is the New York cop whose bad back leads him to Liz Hurley's luscious chiropractor; their relationship hinders his attempts to track down the gunman who shot his neighbour (played by Luis Guzman).
Steve Buscemi makes the most of his limited role as Leary's partner, and DiCillo indulges his disgust at the Hollywood machine by incorporating two desperate screenwriters who spend the movie cooking up a clichéd actioner. It's just unfortunate that you're left wanting to see their film instead, such is the extent of Double Whammy's misfire.
