Dr Mabuse, The Gambler

3

Two discs and 270 minutes of Fritz Lang's 1922 whopper, the first in a thriller series centring on criminal megalomaniac Dr Mabuse (Rudolf Klein-Rogge).

Master of disguise and mind control, Mabuse makes like a kind of Nietzschian übervillain, wreaking havoc in decadent, fearful pre-Hitler Germany. The fatalistic social satire segues interestingly into Hollywoodish action as Mabuse's story yawns open, but Lang's inventive dazzle can't help drowning in such a wonky structure. A tough sit-through, even in this reconstructed, re-scored print.
